Pains after abortion


After an abortion you will most certainly get a post abortion pain and bad stomach ache. Your doctor and gynecologist will have prepared you for these cramps after abortion but it’s hard to give any general tips since an abortion will be very individual and depending on personal circumstances. These circumstances can be both physical and psychological. Pains after abortion are similar to really bad stomach ache or period pains, but the reasons are different. The cramps after abortion will vary in degree and severity, and they will gradually decrease as time passes after the abortion. Pains after abortion is not exclusively located to the stomach but may occur anywhere in your body. You may for example experience back post abortion pain in your back, diffuse pains in your whole body and in your breasts. Medication you can get for your pains after abortion often contain acetaminophen, ibuprofen or even a slight dose of morphine, in case you have really bad post abortion pain. The cramps after abortion are caused by the uterus which tries to get rid of the membranes and residues from the fetal. The uterus works like a hand that clenches in the form of a fist, relaxes and clenches again. This is what feels like cramps after abortion. Sometimes, when the cramping isn’t enough to get the membranes and the blood out, a doctor have to perform curettage. It may be decided that this will be the most fitting method for you in the first place, and then you don’t do the abortion in a medical way using pills. 

If the bleeding continues after more than two to four weeks, you should consult a doctor again to get a medical examination. Very bad post abortion pain, fever or smelly vaginal discharge may indicate an infection. Other signs of this is direct pain over the uterus area of the stomach (and not just the ordinary bad stomach ache), tiredness and aggravated general condition. To relieve pains after abortion you may find back massage, a bottle of hot water held against the stomach, easy exercise or a gentle stomach massage helpful. When the cramps after abortion are at their worst, you can feel comforted just not to be alone. To feel another person’s care can sometimes when it comes to pains after abortion, be the best cure. Since an abortion is such an emotional process, talking to someone about it will make it easier for you to handle.
